Jazz Crazy Records exists to preserve and share the music of the 78 rpm era, with an emphasis on jazz, one of America’s most influential cultural contributions.
Jazz was created by Black artists in Black American communities during a time of deep systemic racism, and many early jazz pioneers were never given the opportunity to record. Their music is lost to us. Yet the wonderful, infectious sound they helped create kept evolving and has won fans around the world.
These fragile 78 rpm shellac discs are what remains of jazz’s earliest years, and we transfer them so that listeners everywhere can hear this important music and learn more about the artists involved.
Records are safely stored in an underground record vault known as the Jazz Bunker in a secure location in the upper midwestern United States.
The collection is managed by caretaker Professor Emma Wilson., who personally supervises digital transfers, record repairs, record storage, record acquisition, and collection organization.
